My Hobby: Driving Around Aimlessly.

I am the type of person to get bored very easily. Unless I am surrounded by people who can entertain me at a moment's notice, I get bored. And if there is no one around to talk to or even just watch TV with, well... I find something to do. Unfortunately for me, I can't pick up a book or magazine without actually wanting to spend my time reading. I love baking, but I only do so when I want a treat (not to mention how much time and effort one has to put into it). I'm not a drawer, nor a painter, and I don't have any coloring books to make me feel like I'm 5 again. So, I turn to the one thing that I know how to do well (though my boyfriend would beg to differ): I drive around.

I know what you are thinking: "What's so bad about that? There's nothing wrong with driving around every once and a while." Well, I'll tell you. It's the fact that I do it at least twice a week, especially during the summer. I don't just drive around the block either. I happen to live in an area which is conducive to long drives. I also have evidence to show you just how much I drive. See this photo:

Yesterday, my car hit 40,000 miles. While 40,000 miles on a car isn't a special milestone, I have had my car for one year. I also know for a fact that my car had less than 30,000 miles on it when my parents bought it for me. It probably had even less than 25,000 on it. Now, I don't think people drive that much in one year. If they do, well, this doesn't show you just how much I like to drive around to cure boredom. I'm the type of person to get on the freeway and just drive until I feel like getting off and then exploring parts of town that I've never been before. Fortunately for me, the place in which I live has 5 suburbs, two of which I have yet to fully explore. I actually have one in which I enjoy going to, but that will be a post for a later time.

While I enjoy the freedom that living in a city gives me, my bank account does not appreciate it. As we all know, cars need gas to run. Gas costs money. Money is something that I as a college student don't have a lot of. While I do have a job, I prefer to keep my account above a certain amount at all times if possible. I'm fairly good at it, but every time I go out it doesn't register to me that I'm wasting gas and that I'll have to fill up sooner than I would if I just stayed home and found something better to do with my time. Driving may be a hobby that brings enjoyment to me, but it isn't the most cost-effective. Maybe I should learn how to knit.
